What are the cyber vulnerabilities in supply chain management? How can firms manage cyber risk and cyber security challenges in procurement, manufacturing, and logistics? Today it is clear that supply chain is often the core area of a firm's cyber security vulnerability, and its first line of defense. This book brings together several experts from both industry and academia to shine light on this problem, and advocate solutions for firms operating in this new technological landscape.
Specific topics addressed in this book include: defining the world of cyber space, understanding the connection between supply chain management and cyber security, the implications of cyber security and supply chain risk management, the "human factor" in supply chain cyber security, the executive view of cyber security, cyber security considerations in procurement, logistics, and manufacturing among other areas.
Chapter 3 provides an earnest and practical assessment of cybersecurity risks and supply chain vulnerabilities and provides a series of clear recommendations for improving cybersecurity. The author provides examples of high-profile cyberattacks, including NotPetya and the ASUS supply chain attack, explains the methods used for the hack, and recommends that companies take a germ-theory–based approach to cybersecurity. According to this perspective, invisible cyberthreats should be regarded as germs, and organizations should implement good cyber hygiene practices to neutralize and avoid infections. The chapter also discusses cyber liability insurance policies, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, third-party cyber risk management, cloud computing vulnerabilities, and specific measures that need to be implemented to protect organizations from malicious code.
