This book offers an insight into data centre transport technology centres and the principal techniques for modern communication transmission of ultra-wideband channels. Beginning with an introduction to digital transmission technologies and data centre networking, the text progresses to discussions on access and DC networking transmission technologies and super-channel transmission by multi-carrier sources, before concluding with a chapter on photonic signal processors. This comprehensive and up-to-date overview is an invaluable source for scientists, engineers, professors and mid-senior level students involved with data transmission and processing.

Concurrently, the explosive expansion of the Internet drove the tremendous progress in the deployment of data centers (DCs) throughout the worldwide information networks. This has led to long distance and short distance interconnections between these DCs, and hence DC networking without going through traditional telecoms networks. This has put tremendous pressure on global telecoms carriers, as they do not own the content of their traffic, such as the traffic of YouTube, Facebook, Google, etc. However, the infrastructure of these telecoms carriers has allowed them to deploy ultra-high capacity mobile networks, thus the emergence of networks such as 5G (fifth-generation) mobile communications, and thus distributed DC networking. This direction of progress has been strategically developed to challenge the other DC networking communities.

Therefore the transmission of ultra-high speed channels and ultra-high capacity links over short distances has become highly critical for DC networking for both telecoms carriers and data communications for DC network owners. Further, the spectral regions of single-mode silica optical fibers have been extensively used in the O-band (1300 nm window) and C+ (110 channels of 50 GHz spacing), pushing into the L-band, even to the 850 nm region with the low cost vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). This spectral extension is required to ensure sufficient bands for high capacity transport. The global transport capacity should reach zettabits per second. Thus several possible solutions have been offered by the research and development communities for such capacity demands.

This e-book will thus address the following two principal techniques for the modern communications transmission of ultra-wideband channels:
- DSP-based techniques in optical transmission systems with both non-coherent (direct detection) and coherent principles and associated modulation formats.
- Principles of processing in the photonic domain with special emphasis on the association of neural computing networking and nonlinear optical logic circuits.
