This book offers the most suitable methods of applying Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technology to conceptual works and/or research studies. For instance, existing IoT protocols such as CoAP and MQTT are complemented by LPWAN to provide better service quality (QoS) to enable the notion of "sensor as a service" to endpoint users which is demonstrated in this book. LPWAN is a new enabling technology for IoT, filling the gap that existed between the legacy network technologies (WLAN, LAN, PAN) in terms of power, range, and data rates. It is also an alternative solution to implementations of IoT via cellular (4G/5G/6G) technologies, as it operates on the ISM band and also provides long-term battery life. Due to the several advantages, it brings, LPWAN raises high enthusiasm for many stakeholders of IoT. However, there still exist many research challenges to be tackled within this technology. As such this book aims at shedding light on those research problems.
There are a variety of devices that are sensing the information around us (our homes, cars, environment, etc.) and share this with the intended parties to constitute the Internet of Things (IoT). It is such a big topic that Cisco predicts 500 Billion things of the IoT to be further included in our connected world; meaning more automation, remote access and control to be infused into our everyday routines.
This brings its own challenges as such a connection requires a well-defined protocol stack as well as facilitating physical and data-link layer protocols restricted under low-power consumption requirements (since most of the IoT devices are dependent on limited power supplies, e.g. batteries). As such, the notion of a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) has emerged, to facilitate the connectivity for the IoT networks in a very long-range setting compared to existing technologies and yet fulfilling the low power consumption requirement.
In a very timely manner, this book, entitled Low-Power Wide-Area Networks: Opportunities, Challenges, Risks and Threats, aims at presenting the recent developments in the field of IoT, especially in the LPWAN domain, and may thus be able to shed some light on it from the editors’ perspective. Many chapter proposals have been submitted by leading academicians and industry researchers. All submissions were reviewed in a rigorous manner and each chapter went through two review cycles. In order to satisfy the expectations of all readers from different backgrounds, the final chapters of the book cover a broad range of topics related to IoT networks, including wired/wireless communication technologies, industrial/civilian applications, cyber security and finally, prevention-detection-mitigation of intrusions.
