Digital manufacturing is everywhere. Technology advances in production engineering have reduced the “artisan skill” traditionally required in manufacturing processes and replaced it with high-precision, computer-controlled machinery. This reduces human errors and variability in output, but it does not reduce the knowledge required of the professional engineer or shop floor worker. In fact, the reverse is true. They still need to understand the fundamentals, and must acquire other important skills.

Anyone who works in machining or additive manufacturing technology must have a solid technical knowledge of CNC technology. It is important to know how the individual components work and how they affect the overall system, the quality of the products produced and the profitability of production. Professionals should be familiar with today's machine tools and the numerous functions of CNC, electrical servo drives, tool systems, NC programming through to digital information processing and automation.

The planning of CNC-supported manufacturing systems begins with a competent communication between manufacturer and buyer. Often the focus is not on full automation, but on the quest for the technically appropriate and profi table, economical solution. A deep knowledge of the terminology is helpful or even indispensable for a better understanding and decision making. Every CNC user should also be knowledgeable and proficient in the very extensive possibilities and advantages generally off ered by CNC technology.

Because of the high technical effort and complexity of digitally automated manufacturing systems, people are still in demand who are trained in CNC technology, who plan and perfect suitable solutions and who do not lose sight of the profi tability of the system. This includes many individuals, from the planner to programmer, from the set-up person, the machine operator to the specialist responsible for operation, maintenance, and repair. Their special knowledge and understanding of the interaction are prerequisites to keep the operation of such manufacturing systems always functional and profitable.
