The rising share of photovoltaic (PV) energy requires sophisticated digital techniques to control, monitor and integrate them with the grid. For movable systems, tracking is necessary. Especially for remote areas, where no trained personnel might be nearby to intervene, such technologies are vital to ensure reliability and power quality, and to harness the solar potential of these locations. This is important to use PV energy in the grid, as well as for desalination, water pumping and hydrolysis.
Digital Technologies for Solar Photovoltaic Systems: From general to rural and remote installations focuses on the latest research and developments in PV energy system operation and integration. It provides extensive coverage of R&D to overcome critical limitations to the use of remote PV systems.
Chapters cover phase-shifting transformers, grid-connected PV micro-inverter, distribution automation, PV powered water pumping, maximum power point tracking and solar tracking, soiling effects and measurement, cleaning methods, IoT based PV module cooling and cleaning, control of energy storage, and energy management.
Digital technologies are defined as electronic tools, a set of technologies, systems, devices and resources that generate, transmit, store or process data. These technologies can be integrated into PV systems to predict, optimize, monitor and control their energy production in the most appropriate and efficient way, for fault detection and diagnosis, as well as for the prediction of PV panel performance, degradation and fatigue failure. Therefore, the main objective of this book is to present relevant works on the integration of digital technologies in PV systems: from general to rural and remote installations. The book focuses on the latest research and developments in remote PV energy system integration. It aims to provide extensive coverage of current research and developmental activities, and new approaches intended to overcome several critical limitations in the use of remote PV systems, such as those connected to grid and water pumps. This using control, monitoring and optimization techniques in the broadest sense, covering the use of new digital technologies such as embedded systems, data connection, Internet of Things, blockchain, cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence and robotics for PV systems through different applications such as MPPT controller, solar tracker, cleaning system, cooling system, water pumping systems, monitoring systems and solar-powered electric vehicles. Moreover, the applications of PV energy systems in distributed generation, microgrids and smart grid systems are also covered in this book.
This book is a highly useful reference guide for researchers, designers, operators, and experts involved with PV systems, as well as for graduate students.
