The safety, maintainability, and maintenance of systems have become more important than ever before. Global competition and other factors are forcing manufacturers to produce highly safe and easily maintainable engineering systems. This means that there is a definite need for safety, maintainability, and maintenance professionals to work closely during the system design and other phases of a project, and this book will help with that.
System Safety, Maintainability, and Maintenance for Engineers presents, in a single volume, what engineers will need when designing systems from the fields of safety, maintainability, and maintenance of systems when they have to all work together on one project and it provides information that the reader will require no previous knowledge to understand. Also offered are sources in the reference section at the end of each chapter so that the reader is able to find further information if needed. For reader comprehension, examples along with their solutions are included at the end of each chapter.
This book will be useful to many people including design engineers; system engineers; safety specialists; maintainability engineers; maintenance engineers; engineering managers; graduate and senior undergraduate students of engineering; researchers and instructors of safety, maintainability, and maintenance; and engineers-at-large.
Thus, the main objective of the book is to meet the need for a single volume that combines system safety, maintainability, and maintenance. The material covered is treated in such a manner that the reader requires no previous knowledge to understand it. The sources of most of the material presented are given in the reference section at the end of each chapter. This will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific area or topic. At appropriate places, the book contains examples along with their solutions, and at the end of each chapter, there are numerous problems to test the reader’s comprehension in the area.
The book is composed of 15 chapters. Chapter 1 presents various introductory aspects of safety, maintainability, and maintenance including useful sources for obtaining information on safety, maintainability, and maintenance. Chapter 2 reviews mathematical concepts considered useful to understand subsequent chapters. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are arithmetic mean, mean deviation, standard deviation, Boolean algebra laws, probability properties, probability distributions, and useful mathematical definitions. Chapter 3 presents various introductory aspects of safety including the need for safety, engineering safety goals, and engineers and safety.
Chapter 4 presents a number of methods considered useful to perform safety analysis. These methods are hazards and operability analysis, fault tree analysis, technic of operations review, failure modes and effect analysis, job safety analysis, control charts, interface safety analysis, Markov method, and safety indexes. Chapter 5 presents various important aspects of safety management and costing. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are safety management-related principles, safety department functions, safety committees, safety cost estimation models and methods, and safety cost performance measurement indexes. Chapter 6 is devoted to maintenance, software, and robot safety. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are reasons for safety-related problems in maintenance, maintenance personnel safety, software hazard causing ways, software hazard analysis methods, types of robot accidents, and robot safeguard methods.
Chapter 7 presents various introductory aspects of maintainability including maintainability versus maintenance and maintainability functions. Chapter 8 is devoted to maintainability tools and specific maintainability design-related considerations. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are cause-and-effect diagram, total quality management, maintainability design factors, simplification and accessibility, and standardization and modularization. Chapter 9 presents various important aspects of maintainability management and human factors in maintainability. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are maintainability management functions in the product life cycle, maintainability organization functions, typical human behaviors, human body measurements and sensory capabilities, and human factors-related formulas.
Chapter 10 is devoted to maintainability testing and demonstration. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are planning and control requirements for maintainability testing and demonstration, maintainability test approaches, and testing methods. Chapter 11 presents various introductory aspects of engineering maintenance, including the need for maintenance, maintenance-related measures, and safety in maintenance. Chapter 12 is devoted to maintenance management and control. Some of the topics covered in the chapter are maintenance management-related principles, effective maintenance management elements, maintenance project control methods, and maintenance management control indices.
