Autonomous Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) outlines the latest research relating to autonomous cars and advanced driver-assistance systems, including the development, testing and verification for real-time situations of sensor fusion, sensor placement, control algorithms, computer vision, and more.

Key Features:

Co-edited by an experienced roboticist and author as well as an experienced academic.
Addresses the legal aspect of autonomous driving and ADAS.
Presents the application of ADAS in autonomous vehicle parking systems.

Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs) are systems in a vehicle that assist the driver in a variety of ways. The ADASs can provide important information about road traffic like signals, blockage, and closures and can suggest better routes to avoid the same. These systems can also detect any fatigue or distraction from the human driver and can alert him or her and can even take control of the vehicle from the human driver automatically. It can also perform functions like cruise control, parking, etc., without human intervention.

The objective of this book is to provide the reader with ongoing research that is relevant to the development and testing of sensor fusion, sensor placement, control algorithms, computer vision, etc., for ADASs. It describes how the current research on ADASs is developed, tested, and verified for real-time situations. With an infinite number of real-time possibilities that need to be addressed, this book provides new methods to solve the complexity of an ADAS.

There are 24 chapters organized into three parts: Section I, “Autonomous Vehicle Test and Development”; Section II, “ADAS and AV Legal Issues and Liabilities”; and Section III, “Autonomous Vehicle Applications.”

- Chapter 1 discusses rule-based and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based decision making and (model-based and model-free) motion planning.

- Chapter 2 focuses on self-driving technology from a control perspective and investigates the control strategies used in autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs) from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. The chapter provides a comparative study on bang-bang, PID, geometry, model predictive, imitation learning-based, and reinforcement learning-based control strategies.

- Chapter 3 presents SLAM with recognition and tracing of moving objects, in the context of dynamic outdoor environments. The objective of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the contemporary developments related to the navigation system, design, and safety issues for autonomous vehicle systems...

With an infinite number of real-time possibilities that need to be addressed, the methods and examples included make this book a valuable source of information for academic and industrial researchers, automotive companies and suppliers.
