В романе Ниша в Пантеоне герой-эмигрант в состоянии некоего затмения ума обнаруживает, что, как только он теряет какую-нибудь вещь, человек из его советского прошлого, связанный с этой вещью, гибнет. Является ли потеря или исчезновение вещи причиной смерти, ее следствием или просто совпадением? Герой склонен полагать, что потеря вещей становится причиной смерти близких; следовательно, смерть наступает по его вине. Мания величия героя тут – в субъективизации мира вокруг него: мир «там», мир, оставленный героем, существует только потому, что герой о нем думает. Другие люди существуют лишь в памяти эмигранта. Потеряв вещь, напоминающую о человеке из прошлого, эмигрант об этом человеке забывает, то есть убивает его, устраняя из собственной памяти.
