Настоящая книга построена на личных (часто домашних) архивах вахтанговцев. В нее включены письма, дневники, записи, выступления, раскрывающие повседневную жизнь Третьей студии, а затем Театра им. Евг. Вахтангова в 1920–1930-е гг., которая никогда не была простой и ровной, а временами достигала подлинного драматизма. Так случилось, когда Вл.И. категорически настаивал на включении студии в состав МХАТа, а право вахтанговцев на особняк Берга вдруг оказалось не безусловным. Отстаивая право на самостоятельное продолжение дела Вахтангова, студийцы были вынуждены постоянно решать вопрос о наследии учителя, о том, что значит быть вахтанговцами. Согласие по этому поводу с приглашенными А. Д. Поповым и Н. П. Акимовым стало недолговечным. В своей совокупности документы раскрывают процесс формирования самой идеи «вахтанговского». Ценным свидетельством является Дневник Мамоновской студии с сохранившимися пометками Вахтангова. «Парижский дневник» Б. Е. Захавы документирует гастроли в театре «Одеон» (1928). Заметки Б. В. Щукина несут такие подробности жизни спектаклей, которые обычно остаются за рамками газетных рецензий.
