Сочинение Г.К.Котошихина является одним из ценнейших источников о состоянии Московского государства в середине XVII века. Его автор, Григорий Карпович Котошихин, был подьячим Посольского приказа. В 1664 г. он бежал из Московии в Польшу. Проведя некоторое время в Польше, он давал консультации по вопросам обороноспособности Московии, а затем перебрался в Пруссию и далее в Любек и в Швецию. В 1666-1667 гг. он жил в Стокгольме под именем Ивана Александра Селицкого, где "при ободрении" государственного канцлера графа Магнуса Делагарди и составил свое описание быта, нравов и политического устройства России. В 1667 г. Котошихин был обвинен в убийстве своего домохозяина и казнен.
