Немецкий истребитель Halberstadt D.I (III) (1915) В конце 1915 года в компании Halberstädter FlugzeugWerke GmbH под руководством инженера Карла Тайца был разработан на базе двухместного разведчика Halberstadt B.II первый в мире одноместный истребитель с двигателем жидкостного охлаждения. Его появление было продиктовано необходимостью замены на фронте Fokker Е.III, который уже не мог достойно противостоять французским «ньюпорам». Цельнодеревянный двухстоечный биплан с полотняной обшивкой, типичный для своего времени, получил обозначение Halberstadt D.I. Он был оснащен рядным шестицилиндровым мотором «Мерседес» D.I мощностью 100 л.с. и вооружен синхронным пулеметом LMG 08. В феврале 1916 года машина была облетана, и оказалось, что ее характеристики не могут обеспечить превосходство над истребителями Антанты. Была сделана попытка исправить положение: на самолет, получивший обозначение D.Iа, установили двигатель Аргус As.II (120 л. с.) с радиатором автомобильного типа. Однако и эта модификация оказалась неудачной. Тем не менее работы над самолетом были продолжены и через несколько месяцев совершил первый полет Halberstadt D.II, оснащенный двигателем Мерседес D.II. Лобовой радиатор был заменен на крыльевые. Самолет получился маневренным, но имел относительно невысокую скорость и слабую конструкцию силовых узлов. Выхлопной коллектор двигателя вначале был проложен по правому борту и заканчивался за кабиной пилота, но позже был выведен за верхнее крыло. 21 марта 1916 года истребитель приняли на вооружение и запустили в серийное производство. Уже в июне 1916-го серийные машины стали поступать на вооружение частей первой линии. Они применялись главным образом в качестве истребителей сопровождения для двухместных разведчиков и ближних бомбардировщиков, но встречались и в «целевых» истребительных частях. Фронтовые летчики дали самолету положительную оценку, поскольку ее летные данные были лучше, чем у монопланов «Фоккер» и «Пфальц», составлявших на тот момент основу германской истребительной авиации
