Алфавит — это средство общения между людьми, такая зримая форма языка, действие которой не ограничивается временем и пространством. В основе алфавита лежит система знаков, посредством которых фиксируются мысли, представления и впечатления; письменная информация доступна как для передачи другим людям, так и для накапливания в удобной для последующего использования форме. Для идеографического, «картинного» письма — примером тому служит китайский язык — характерна относительная независимость алфавита от языка. Вопросами построения шрифта занимался великий художник и ученый Леонардо да Винчи (1452 — 1519). Он считал, что шрифт и архитектура находятся в тесной внутренней связи, поэтому законы построения у них должны быть общими, и если античная архитектура имеет в своей основе пропорции человеческого тела, то классическая соразмерность должна быть использована, по мнению художника, и при построении шрифта. Леонардо да Винчи строил буквы по квадрату, разделенному по высоте на десять равных частей. Сохранились образцы букв, сконструированных великим мастером.
