Now that everyone accepted that the Viking ship was a brilliantly designed vessel, the question arose as to how such an advanced design had been developed. The discoveries of archaeologists help us to answer the question. Much of Scandinavia is poor land for crops and animals, but most of it is close to the sea, to fiords or lakes, so that with a boat it is easy to catch enough fish to supplement the diet.
