Few people regard the rocking chair as anything but a comfortable piece of furniture. However, to the artist's eye it can be a medium for artistic expression. New York gallery director Steinbaum has divided her book into two parts: early rocking chairs, showing the best of the traditional styles; and contemporary rocking chairs, both functional and nonfunctional, as created by contemporary designers. The familiar Boston, Shaker, and Adirondack rockers, as well as a few fanciful wicker examples, are found among the traditional rockers, along with a concise historical text. The contemporary rockers are delightfully bizarre, mainly one-of-a-kind creations intended to be works of art. As a showcase of rocker styles, this book belongs in contemporary art collections. Highly recommended for public library and academic collections.
