Playing with an app on your smartphone. Clicking through a website. Without even realizing it, you’re using coding. Coding is the language used to communicate with a computer. By creating a set of code, you’re writing directions in a language that the computer can follow. Although computers may seem super smart, that’s not the case! The only reason computers know how to do anything is because they have been coded to do it. A computer’s code—the very specific directions given by a person—allows it to be the super-smart device we all know and love. The reality is, anyone can learn to code. In this book we’ll be creating projects using one coding language in particular: Scratch.
Scratch is an online coding platform that uses colorful coding blocks to create everything from games to presentations to animation. The colored blocks are sorted into categories like Motion, Looks, and Sound. By connecting the colorful blocks, you can start coding whatever comes to mind.
